Over its 80-year history, The Columbian has earned a trophy case full of student newspaper accolades and shines on the national stage. With honors including Columbia University's Silver Crown distinctions from CSPA– this storied publication proves that great journalists start early.

Students committing to the student newspaper gain hands-on experience with industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite, while learning the fundamentals of newspaper and magazine production. They develop skills in journalistic writing, theories, and practices, as well as computer graphics, photography, and illustration. Students are trained in all aspects of publication, including story generation, source acquisition, article writing, editing, design, marketing, and distribution.

The activity's primary focus is producing the bi-monthly student newspaper, The Columbian. Working in student-centered activities like The Columbian and the school's literary magazine, Guildscript, emphasize our students' teamwork, advanced software usage, and professional production techniques, with students taking on specialized roles while contributing to all aspects of the publication process.

"Our history is woven into our identity, influencing our perspectives on nearly everything. Columbia High School (CHS) is no stranger to this, as the over 200-year-old school has seen thousands of students walk the halls and has helped shape generations." - Managing Editor Maddie Flesch '25
